There are two types of organization:
cerebral (mentally categorizing information so it can be retrieved),
and
physical (managing space, time and stuff so it can be retrieved).
Ann helps students with both!!!
Why are organizational skills critical to successful learning?
Organization is the key to successful productivity. Students need to be taught how to organize their time, their space and their thoughts in order to become successful learners.
How is organization of time taught?
Management of time is critical for all students to master. Ann teaches her students to keep a planning calendar, set priorities and chunk work into manageable pieces.
What about the chaotic spaces?
Lessons on managing the back holes of space are taught:
What about the cerebral organization as it affects writing and reading?
Clear communication skills, particularly through writing, are important throughout high school and into university.Pre-writing strategies, brainstorming, thesis development and outlining form the foundation of planning. Ann instructs the students on the usage of Inspiration software, a very powerful organizational tool. Students are supported through the editing and drafting stages by drawing their attention to the pitfalls of wordiness and common grammatical issues.
Reading a text, identifying the important information, and creating a set of notes that can be used to further understand concepts and prepare for future testing may be the most important skill neglected in schools.Strategies such as READ and APE, are taught to help students deal with their material more effectively. Students are shown the benefits of effective notes as well as trained in how to make effective class notes. A note taking technique is matched to their individual ability and learning style.
Students will have an opportunity to try out these strategies in the context of their current school work and receive feedback from Ann. |
